090127-23 Stanfield Knife, Burlington Chert
122 mm x 49 mm
Approx 4 7/8" x 1 3/8"
Evaluation by Ben Stermer of Western Typology Artifact Authentication Service(Original Paperwork not Available): A medium-size knife form with straight blade edges and a rounded base. Cross-section is lenticular and flaking is by initial percussion followed by pressure edge-work. Resharpenings have reduced the original size, also resulting in the beveled blade edges.
Provenance: Found along Charette Creek in Warren County, Missouri. Ex. W. Engmann Collection.
Evaluation: This is an authentic artifact of the Early Archaic Period, dating in the 9640 B.P. to 8920 B.P. Range. The Stanfield is named for examples found at the Stanfield-Worley rock-shelter in northern Alabama. This is a highly generalized knife made over a long time period. Some examples found in Missouri and Illinois may be related to side-notched St. Charles Dovetail points. Some examples are more than ten inches in length.
Came with collection statement dated 12/3/74: " This collection of stones are entirely from the area near Toledo, Ohio in Lucas County ... some were also found South East of Mansfield, Ohio. These were personally collected by Leo MacDonough between 1910-1940.
