230601-070 An Early Desert Cahuilla Polychrome Figurative Basket with the rare use of red Yucca Root Basket: Mission Bowl; SOLD
Late 19th Century
5.75" H x 17.5"D
A large and early open basket. With letters scattered near rim and unusual snake like figure with crosses and three sets of 2 figures which seem to be human dancers in profile with the lead figure holding a rattle ? and someone leaning forward. Minor wear with 2 breaks of the rim foundation and a few stitches damaged. Overall in Very Good Condition.
Notes: the use of Letters in Native baskets was often the result of a Native weaver trading for objects that have letters, such as a sack of flour. The letters were symbols and decorative elements to the native weaver without connection to Words. From time to time we also see complete words, but those are typically in later examples or in commissioned pieces.
