An Early Example of Northwest Coast Silver Work with an uncommon use of the Swastika motif.
Before Nazi Germany co-opted the swastika in the 1930s, the symbol had a long and varied history in the United States, where it was widely used as a positive emblem of good luck, prosperity, and spirituality. Its origins stretch back thousands of years across cultures—derived from the Sanskrit word svastika, meaning "well-being" or "good fortune"—and it appeared in Native American, ancient European, and Asian traditions. In the U.S., this ancient meaning carried over into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before Hitler’s regime irrevocably tainted it.
