A Pima winnowing basket (sometimes called a winnowing tray or platter basket) is a traditional shallow, round or oval basket made by the Ak-Chin O’odham and Tohono O’odham peoples (commonly referred to historically as the Pima and Papago). These baskets are specifically designed for winnowing — the process of separating grain (especially wheat, tepary beans, or mesquite pods) from chaff by tossing the mixture into the air so the wind carries away the lighter chaff.
