Large Mission polychrome basketry bowl; circa 1890
Juncus, dyed juncus and sumac

Large late 19th century Polychrome Bowl (Gathering Basket), probably Desert Cahuilla or Cupeno of a type used for gathering plant foods such as palm dates.
Against a sumac background, two narrow parallel meandering motif bands surround and enclose a four inch wide red natural juncus band that encircles the basket at midpoint.
Near mint condition with only a very few missing rim stitches.
