The Adena culture (c. 1000 BCE to 1 CE) was a Native American society during the Early Woodland period, centered in the Ohio River Valley (modern-day Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, and surrounding states). They are renowned for constructing large earthen mounds for burials and ceremonies, marking the beginning of the "Mound Builder" tradition in North America. Adena people were hunter-gatherers who also practiced early agriculture, and their tools reflect advanced stone-working skills.
