Northern Plains Pipe Bag; Quill panels; late 19th century. This collection came from the son of Gordon Graham Jones (B.1901 – D. 1987).


Gordon G Jones, while wintering in San Francisco in 1911, discovered what was to be his life-long passion and vocation by attending a Wild West show and was enamored with a trick roping act. When Gordon wasn’t in school or doing homework he was most likely found practicing twirling a lariat. His long hours of practice finally began paying off in in 1918.

It was at that time that Gordon was offered a job to work at various fairs and rodeos as a trick roper and rider for a traveling wild-west show by the name of the Millirick Brothers. While doing the show he met various people involved in the motion picture industry. In 1920 he travelled to start his career in the movies. The first movie he worked on was a silent picture named “Small Town Hero” starring Ben Turpin and Mable Norman. This comedy was the first motion picture of a career that spanned seven decade that included work
