These sorts of dolls were made for the tourist market. Small enough to handle if traveling by car, we start seeing these in the 1920-30s era, and they were likely an outgrowth of the smaller Germantown Loom Samplers that we see as early as ca 1900 and which consisted just of an unfinished small colorful rug still connected to the top and bottom loom bars. The Germentown Wool was a commercial wool that was in many colors and was purchased by the weaver at a trading post. Early Germatntown miniature loom weavings normally were unfinished, taken off the vertical posts, but with the top and bottom wooden bars still attached, they could be easily rolled up and put in a suitcase for the early railroad travelers. Sometimes the battans combs and even small yarn balls were included such as seen in this later loom doll.
