Very fine detail, masterful carving.
The wolf is an important animal in Zuni Pueblo fetish carvings.
It is a teacher of new ideas and wisdom, and represents intense
loyalty with a balance of independence. It is family oriented, and symbolizes warmth. It is a deeply spiritual figure for many carvers and owners, a pathfinder on journey of survival and a night story teller.
The wolf is part of six-directional fetish carvings, along with mountain lions, badgers, bears, eagles and moles.
Calvin Weeka of Zuni Pueblo, NM crafts very fine and detailed fetish carvings, often in Picasso Marble.
His level of skill allows him to carve intricate detail into his fetish carvings, depicting an animal's fur or skin texture in a very realistic way. Often times, his animals will be shown standing on a rock or ground surface, as an all-in-one carving (the ground is not separate from the animal's body, and yet there is carved-out space between the animal and the ground).
Calvin Weeka's fetishes are sought-after by Zuni fetish collectors who appreciate a high level of detail and high-quality stone carving material.
