Santa Clara Pueblo
Teresa Gutierrez was born to Rosita Velarde in Santa Clara Pueblo in 1933. She learned to make pottery from watching and working with her mother as she grew up. Over time Teresa developed a distinctive style of carved black pottery with sharp, concise lines outlined with matte paint.
Over the course of her career, Teresa earned numerous ribbons at the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and the Santa Fe Indian Market.
Teresa is the mother of Carol Velarde, Marie Suazo, Doris Tenorio and Tony Gutierrez, Jr., all accomplished potters from Santa Clara Pueblo.
