Southern California Basketry

Picture
A fine Cahuilla basket, Palm Springs, CA, Circa 1900-1920
The basket-weaving tribes of Southern California that we will focus on  include:

Chumash and  the Mission Groups (Fernandeno, Gabrielino, Serrano, Luiseno, Cahuilla, Diegueno, Morongo)

The primary weaving materials will be Juncus (natural and dyed)  and Sumac weft and grass bundle warp for the Mission groups, and a 3-rod juncus foundation for the Chumash..

A handsome Chumash basket from the Santa Barbara area. Very similar to the Mission work except that the foundation is 3 rods of juncus, not a bundle of grass, and the fag end (the starting end) of the weft is clipped tight to the coil, not tucked to the right as seen in Mission baskets.

Can't see the Fag Ends as they are clipped tight to the coil in Chumash baskets.
